So to say it in different words, by “Sugar Free” products manufacturers simply mean that a product does not contain table sugar (Sucrose), but it may contain plenty of other sweeteners, such as fructose that contains a lot of calories.
A good example of such “sugar free desserts” is fruit desserts. Such desserts do not contain table sugar, so manufacturers can safely stick “Sugar Free” sticker to it, but they do contain fructose (fruit sugar) that is a major source of calories.
So to conclude, consuming “Sugar Free” products does not mean getting fewer calories, because except table sugar, they may contain other types of carbohydrates (sugars) that can be affect your blood sugar level.
The best way to ensure that you are buying sugar free desserts is to read the label. When you check the label, you can easily find out what combination sugar, fat and protein does a product includes and how safe is it for you. This is much better, than replying only on a sticker that says that the product is sugar free.

Sugar free desserts are sweet, but they do not contain calories. How is that possible? Very simply, sugar free desserts include non-nutritive (artificial, human made) sweeteners.
